You're right, a quick test shows that it behaves different from what I
assumed. When a program starts, the first part of the line in dayfile is
written:

    start       (Fri Jun 20 13:30:43 CEST 2003) with lapw0 (1/20 to go)
>   lapw0       (13:30:43) 29.490u 0.130s 0:59.19 50.0% 0+0k 0+0io 188pf+0w
>   lapw1       (13:31:42)

When a program is finished, the line is completed with timing and load
information that comes from the system. I assumed that dayfile would remain
unaltered when a program crashes, but obviously the same timing information
is written in that case.

Conclusion: in the problem under consideration, the problem most likely
still is in lapw2, not in lcore.
