Hi Joachim,
thanks for your help.  I changed the format of my e-mails from 'rtf' to 'plain text'; they are readable now in the archives and it says there I'm using ISO-8859-1.  Seems there are still a few odd characters here and there, but at least the text can be read.

	it seems that your mailer or your mailserver is responsible for
	the "weird" display. From your headers I gather that you are using
	M$ Exchange:
	
	> Content-Type: text/plain;
	>         charset="UTF-8"
	> X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.0.5762.3
	
	Maybe you could try to change the character set from UTF-8 to
	ISO-8859-15. UTF-8 is uses 2-byte encoded characters, which is not handled
	properly by all mailers.
