This looks impossible? Without an initial slash, this directory must be 
in your own account, and even a subdirectory of the directory where you 
run your calculation.

Probably yes, but you will not solve your disk space problem, as all 
large files will still be in your own account. Just as with ./ as scratch.

I think so, otherwise the risk is that lapw2 will not find the files it 
needs from lapw1.
