I currently use a 2.6 kernel (2.6.11-gentoo-r5) but I have also used
2.4 with success. My computer has SMP architecture (Xeon P4) and with
the 2.6 kernel the performance should be increased with respect to
HT. Anyway, I would definitely recommend using a 2.6 kernel.
