try with this in terminal:
sudo apt-get install libXss.so.1
sudo apt-get install apt-file
apt-file update
apt-file search libXss.so.1
sudo apt-get install libxss1
sudo apt-get install libXss.so.1
sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment
sudo apt-get update

i am using w2web locally on my computer and have ubuntu 12.04 desktop version.  So i don't use ssh or vnc.
