The Xeons currently supporting 4-chip SMP (71xxM) are different from the
Xeon 51xx and 30xx in architecture. They are similar to Xeon 50xx or Pentium
D 8/9xx, featuring dedicated (not shared) 1M L2 cache per core. You can find
their performance at http://www.spec.org/cpu2000/results/res2006q4/. A
good news is that the quad-core system will be rolling out next month. Thus,
the 8-core system can be established by 2 chips/board and 4 cores/chip.
By the way, Sun's Ultra-sparc T1 supports 8 cores/chip.
